A family tradition; the 4th generation practices
under the guidance of the 3rd and the 2nd.
When German immigrant John Roeser Sr. arrived in the Midwest in 1905, he started and operated a wholesale bakery business on Wells St., where he not only produced his products but personally delivered them by horse and wagon.
It was 1911 when he first opened his bakery to a German and Scandinavian clientele at 3216 W. North Ave., where his wife Hattie worked with him for 50 years. His son, John Jr. learned the business working with his father and assumed full responsibility when illness forced Roeser Sr. into retirement. As time went on, this bakery tradition was carried on by grandson, John Roeser III.
Now, three generations later, he is at the helm of Chicago's oldest family-owned bakery. Roeser's employs more than 25 full-time people, many from the neighborhood, and has maintained its tradition of constantly improving quality and bettering cutomer service.
Back in 1996, the Chicago City Council honored Roeser's 85th anniversary by designating one block of North Ave. as "Honorary John C. Roeser Avenue," after our founder, John C. Roeser Senior. This is a great point of pride for all of us at Roeser's Bakery; Chicago's oldest family owned retail bakery. The Roeser family would like to Thank You for your continued patronage and support.
